Grad School Alternatives

Here are my alternatives to graduate school for those who are thinking about going BUT have no idea about how it will get you forward towards actual life goals.

1. Go get an internship in the field in which you think you want to work —- you can do this for 5 hours every week volunteering. EVERY INDUSTRY takes free labor. You just have to seek out the right person. Be committed. Do it for  a minimum of 3 months.

2. Start reading the best books in your new field and listening to lectures online. Buy the books used or go to the library. Audit classes at your largest & nearest university. Just sit in and see how long it takes to get kicked out. OR just show up the first day of every class in the degree program and get the course syllabuses. Here is one excellent example.

3. Find a mentor; pick someone who is doing GREAT at the job you want to do. Buy them lunch or coffee EVERY TIME you can. Mow their lawn if you have to. Ask them for direction and insights.

4. Take an entry level job and work your way up. This can still be done and happens all of the time for people who are motivated. At the very least it gets you closer to finding a mentor and gives you an up close view of what you think you want to do but aren’t very sure about. Plus you are getting paid rather than acquiring bills.

5. Create your own opportunity. The hardest path possibly, but well worth the sweat and probably a better use of your dollars. If you are going to spend $60k-ish on school, why not invest that capital in your very own brand new endeavor. Build the thing that you want to do from the ground up. Do it on the side after you have done steps 1-4. Take the leap when momentum gets going. Get a loan if necessary. At least you have a better upside possibility.

you have settled for less.

if you are past your freshman year in college, i am going to make a not-so-giant bet that you have already SETTLED FOR LESS in at least 1 significant area of your life. was it your choice of college? or the degree major you picked? was it the man/woman that you married? was it your career? was it an opportunity that you couldn’t pull the trigger on? was it the move to a new location that you just couldn’t make? was it performing a major task or an assignment to some degree significantly less than your capability? is it happening right now on a daily basis? are you ‘fitting in’ when you should be using your strengths?

WHY?

why did you do it?

go on, think about it for a moment…….come up with your BEST explanation.

NOW, what is still in front of you where you don’t have to settle for less? Sure, the obstacles are great. And, if the dream you have is worth something, then there will certainly be sacrifice.  GET ON WITH IT! get off your ass and quit your moping — DO something worth living for. it is not too late. be the spouse you want from your partner. be the leader that you have dreamt about. take the risk that you have been scared of. build the business that you have been envisioning. get neck deep in the cause that you intellectually agree with but have done nothing for.

make a list! —- what areas where you are going to stop settling?

make an action plan — it doesn’t have to be complete; some starter steps will do.

get going!

don’t be stupid anymore

one of the most basic leadership axioms that i hear from leaders at every level is KEEP LEARNING. usually this is followed by a command to read tenaciously. i would like to add to that by saying that you must read + apply (try) what you read. you can’t just be a learner in leadership, you must also be an experimenter with the knowledge that you are gaining. what ever your gut level passion is that will end up being the feild of your leadership, you must pursue learning with an insatiable hunger combined a with a courageous desire to implement new ideas & thoughts. a remarkable young leader i know is already chasing down his desire to be in the FBI (then the secret service) at the age of 15 by learning, volunteering and seeking the direction of those who know how to get there.

what are you doing?

ask yourself…

  1. what are you reading right now that will prepare you for your leadership?
  2. who are you learning from that is further out in front of you in your feild of leadership?
  3. how are you experimenting with the implementation of new ideas into your chosen arena?
  4. what area of leadership are you working on right now with yourself to become a better leader?
